We are wired for connection, and when we cultivate good relationships, it leads to great rewards. Research shows love and health have a strong link.
It can yield important health benefits that can impact your mental, emotional and even your physical well-being.
Let’s look at what love is
The dictionary’s definition states it is an intense feeling of deep affection as well as a great interest and pleasure in something.
Love is many things. A very important one is a willingness to put another’s well-being above your own. Another is a commitment to helping, respecting, and caring for another.
Love involves a give and receive exchange.
What are some health benefits of love?
Maintains a Healthy Heart: Studies indicate that those who are involved in good, strong, happy marriages have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who are in stressful relationships or tend to feel lonely more often.
Keeps the Doctor Away: Feeling loved, cared for and secure tends to boosts the immune system and reduce the chance of catching a cold or other viral infections.
Increases Life Expectancy: Research suggests that married people in particular but those also involved in healthy social relationships typically live longer.
Reduces Depression: Stable marriages and friendships have been shown to reduce the feelings of isolation and depression in both males and females.
Decreases Anxiety: MRI scans have shown that those who are involved in stable, long-term relationships had greater activity and activation in the part of the brain that is responsible for the reward/pleasure response and less activation in the area of the brain associated with anxiety.
Reduces Stress Levels: The security and support healthy relationships offer makes you less likely to feel stressed.
Better Sleep: Because loving relationships lead to less stress, you are more likely to sleep well and feel refreshed when you wake in the morning.
These are just a few of the benefits love can bring to our emotional, mental and physical health. Sometimes it can be difficult to find and maintain the love we all long for. There is one from whom love never fails. Let’s take a look.
What does the bible say about Love?
Jesus says in John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
So what does Jesus love do for us? His love cleanses us through forgiveness. It also sanctifies us, allowing us to grow into who we are created to be. His love endures forever.
Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25, 27)
Truth is we love because he first loved us. Love is a gift and it is good for our health so go out and share some today!
